Is China safe for tourists?
I visit China a fair amount for both work and to visit family.
The biggest physical threats in China are crossing the street and breathing the air, which affect tourists and natives alike.
The biggest differential threat to tourists is getting overcharged for stuff and getting approached by street merchants: a threat to the pocketbook, but not to your person.
Two years ago I ran into a girl from Switzerland in Gansu province China, in which I was working for a gas pipeline project. This girl was holding a piece of paper looking for help with a broken touring bike on the high way. So I pulled over asked her what happened, it comes out that she and her friend, two grils, cycled along together in china on the high way, till that day , they have finished 1/3 of their journey which is about 1000miles . But cause the loud wind that day, her partner even didn't realized she has fell behind and didn't notice the phonecall from her at all, and all the mantenace tools was on her friend's bike. So I drove her and her bike to her friend, helped them fixed the bike and gave them some water supply, till they were back on the tour again.
I tell the story to show that in China, many many people are happy to offer help to strangers. These two girls even wouldn't finish their journey by cycling if China was not safe for tourists. China is a beautiful and safe country for touring by walking, cycling, driving.
I recommend you to read a book The Longest Way written by Christoph Rehage who is from Germany, walked through China from Beijing to Urumchi in 12 months. The book is full of pictures and stories about his 4646Km journey from east China to west China. I believe you would find some answers to your question.

China is one of the safest places I have been in the world and I enjoy traveling there for that reason. I have not feared once going anywhere in China including the rural areas, crowded transport, or the major cities. I have always been treated well, sometimes embarrassingly so and as some have pointed out foreigners are safer than locals.
In short I love China and would love to live there. I go as often as I can.
Totally. Australia is far more dangerous. In China, if anyone tries to harm you a big crowd will gather. There are security cameras everywhere. People generally have high moral standards. That being said petty crime is around and the main reason is poverty. People will steal your stuff in a remote area if you fall asleep on the bus etc. If you go to Beijing, don’t get scammed by people at the wall or whatever. They will try to take you to a really expensive tea house ( you only find out when you get the bill ).
Avoid dodgy KTV. Just don’t do dumb things.
Muggings, rapes, murders, gun crime, gangs, and stuff that can happen randomly in the US, or other places like Australia are much, much less.
Australia has a huge recreational drug problem, especially with ice. Don’t have to deal with that here.
China executes more criminals than any other country by far. You don’t want to mess with the law here.
To be honest, many Chinese people are afraid of traveling in America because some news that reported happened there. How Chinese people think of America is same as how American think of China. The news you have heard may be true but it’s the small part of this country. Just like chinese can’t agree with the law in some states that you can get your own guns in your bedside tables. What’s worse, the medium let Chinese know some drugs in America are legal…
HOWEVER, we both know this two countries are safe enough to travel.
